Marine and coastal activities are closely interrelated, and conflicts among different sectors can undermine management and conservation objectives. Governance systems for fisheries, power generation, irrigation, aquaculture, marine biodiversity conservation, and other coastal and maritime activities are typically organized to manage conflicts within sectors, rather than across them. Based on the discussions around eight case studies presented at a workshop held in Brest in June 2019, this paper explores institutional approaches to move beyond managing conflicts within a sector. We primarily focus on cases where the groups and sectors involved are heterogeneous in terms of: the jurisdiction they fall under; their objectives; and the way they value ecosystem... |

This paper presents the structure and examples of results from a bioeconomic model that stimulates the fisheries of the English Channel. The main purpose of the model is to study the consequences of various management alternatives on the economic situation of UK, French and Belgian fleets fishing in the area, and on exploited resources. Considering the large number of technical interactions, the whole Channel may be regarded as one large multi-country, multi-gear and multi-species fishery. The model describes this feature through the link between three entities : fleets, "métiers", and species caught. The empirical basis of the model is composed of UK, French and Belgian data concerning stocks, fleets and landings, and two economic sample surveys of UK and... |

This paper examines how the traditional carp sector in Poland developed during the recent period, paying a particular attention to the different forms of innovations that have been implemented. Mostly based on first-hand, face-to-face interviews, the paper shows that despite the fact that aquaculture of carp is still characterised by strong traditional and cultural features, different categories of economic agents along the value-chain engaged in various kinds of technical, market and institutional innovations. These innovative strategies could be further replicated and developed through collaborative process, where policy makers have a potential role to play. The research results showed the existence of huge potential for innovation in traditional carp... |

The UK fishing sector has been under the spotlight since the beginning of the Brexit debate. Political commentators claimed that up to 90 per cent of British fishers supported Brexit as they considered the UK was disadvantaged compared to other EU Member States. Their main grudge is about the equal access that all Member States have had to all EU waters – with the exception of territorial waters, up to 12 nautical miles from the coast – since the formal inception of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) in 1983. Combined with what they perceive to be an unbalanced allocation of fishing quotas, this legal framework is thought by the UK fishing industry to be the main reason for the poor management of EU fisheries, which could be terminated following Brexit thus... |

The King scallop Pecten maximus constitutes the first landed species in terms of tonnage and the second or third one in terms of value for the French fisheries. More than 90% of these landings come from the English Channel indicating that its exploitation is essential to local fleets. The COMANCHE project (Ecosystem Interactions and anthropogenic impacts on King scallops populations in the English Channel) proposed to improve the knowledge of the scallop within the Channel, through an ecosystem-based approach for fisheries, appealing to a wide range of scientific disciplines (physics, chemistry, genetics, ecology, geostatistics, modeling, economics ....). Researches on the spatial location of scallop beds, connectivity by larval dispersal between beds,... |

This document is the 2001 activity report delivered by IFREMER, CEDEM (IUEM, UBO) and ENSA of Rennes for a co-financed study by the Brittany region within the framework of the XII CPER. This report is composed of: - an IFREMER study on the historical evolution of the Breton fleet created using data from the "halieutic observations system" (SIH) and surveys on the economic activity of fishing ships. The study is most interested in the Mor Braz and the Sea of Iroise sites. - an analysis by CEDEM of the legal and economic aspects of fishing along the coastal strip through two case studies: A seasonal break from bottom trawling and the diversification of professional fishing towards tourist and recreational economic activities. - a study by ENSA of Rennes on... |
